The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared – Jonas Jonasson

“The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared” turned out to be one of the worst books I have read in years. That’s what you get for trusting the bestseller list and giving this book with the weird title a chance. Books with 400 pages like this one I usually finish reading in about a week – this on the contrary, dragged itself on for months, it simply hasn’t been able to capture my interest until the very end.

There was nothing special to say about the style, as it was as simple as it can get. The characters lacked depth, except for the 100 year old man, who is already mentioned in the title. In every other chapter his life experiences from the past were told in the form of flashbacks. Here, the definition of fiction reached a remarkable level, where everything that was told sounded absolutely ridiculous. Just like the rest of the events and the adventures which happened to the centenarian after he has “climbed out of the window and disappeared”. And that’s coming from me, a devoted fan of fiction and never having had anything to say against a sci-fi novel before!

All my hopes have been put into the ending, so that all those pages would have been worth reading, but the story finished off with yet another disappointment.
Keep your hands off of this one! How this book made it onto the bestseller list can probably only be explained with the “50 Shades of Grey” phenomenon 😉
