The Giver – Lois Lowry

I have stumbled across this book through a list of “highly rated books” on the website Goodreads.com, but I’ve got to say that its target audience is and stays young adults (if not even mainly kids).

The story had an interesting idea, though it lacked in execution. It reminded me a bit of “Brave New World” with its setting and a seemingly idealistic society. What felt the most disturbing though, was the fact that there were logical gaps within the story [! spoiler alert ! – If the community is so gated and protected, how could the protagonist escape so easily from it? And how could him and the child he has escaped with, have stayed alive for so long on the barest minimum of food??]

All in all, while writing the review, I have finally lowered it to just 2 out of 5 stars, since in my opinion, it simply lacks depth.
If you’re still curious about it, give it a read, at least it’s a quick one and you wouldn’t be wasting your time.
