The Bookseller of Kabul – Åsne Seierstad

Having by chance stumbled across this book in a bookshop in Cuba, I couldn’t have been more glad to have come across it!!

This narrative of a “not so usual” Afghan family is so eye-opening on so many levels. It was specifically for me, since I’ve never dived into the topic about the country or its culture before. It’s shocking and heartbreaking to read about the reality what women live through in such a society but for this I also believe that the book deserved 5 out of 5 stars, since it’s written in such a non-judgemental way. The author made her opinion clear in a very brief way in the very beginning of the book and has not inserted it anywhere else throughout the story. Would I have been interested what her fights and discussions of disagreement among the family were? (as mentioned by some previous reviewers) Yes, of course! But this would have turned it into a whole different book altogether and I have respect for the chosen perspective.

It’s touching, it’s heartbreaking, it pulls you in and makes you read on while sticking to a very simple style. All in all, I can say that I absolutely suggest it as a read and it has made it onto my list of favourite books!
